Long pepper or Indian long Pepper is commonly known as Peepal or Pippali from the family Piperaceae. It is cultivated for its fruit that is dried and used as a spice. It traces back its roots to Ayurvedic textbooks for its medicinal and dietary uses and later reached Greece in the 5th or 6th century BCE.
Peepal is similar in taste to black pepper but is usually less harsh, with sweet notes similar to that of cardamom and cinnamon.
Peepal is rarely found in European cuisines, but commonly used Indian and Nepalese vegetable pickles, North African spice mixtures, and various Indonesian and Malaysian dishes. It is one of the main ingredients in Nihari a famous Indian dish. It can also be used as a substitute for black pepper and is an excellent seasoning for meat dishes.
