Origin

Javitri or Mace is a crimson-red, thread-like spice, which is native to the Bandana Islands in Indonesia. It is actually a seed covering obtained from the nutmeg plant, sun-dried, and used as whole or powdered.

Flavour Profile

Javitri has a warm and nutty flavour profile similar to nutmeg. However, it is subtler than nutmeg in its taste.

Cooking Uses

Javitri is added to many desserts like pies, jams, puddings, and cakes to balance the sweetness. In South-Asian cooking, it is used in curries and sauces to lend its saffron colour and to give a peppery taste. The warm subtle flavour also makes it a good addition to drinks like masala tea and hot milk.
